Rallies were held recently celebrating the 46th annual general campaign of the Hawaii Island United Way.
The goal for this year is to raise $1.2 million to support 54 programs provided by 40 partner agencies. Each year, more than 75 percent of Hawaii Island residents benefit from the health and human service programs offered through the Hawaii Island United Way’s partner agencies.
“This year’s theme, Give With Aloha, speaks to the generosity that our island is known for. It’s giving from the heart rather than the pocket, giving above and beyond,” said campaign co-chairman Wally Lau.

Art hike slated Thursday
The hui of Kapulehu Dryland Forest will lead an art hike, in conjunction with the Hawaii Nei Art Contest, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. Participants will glimpse into the past and learn about plants and animals in one of the most unique and threatened ecosystems on the island.

Midwife documentary to be shown Friday
Island Naturals Kona hosts the showing of a documentary, “Guerrilla Midwife,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the store. The event includes a talk story concerning birth, labor assistants and gentle birth.

Big Island Fair
opens Thursday
E.K. Fernandez Shows presents the Big Island Fair from Thursday through Sunday at the Old Kona Airport Park. The fair features rides, games, food and free entertainment. New this year are the Magic Maze Fun House and the Jungle Twist Coaster.
The fair is open from 6 p.m. to midnight Thursday and Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $1 Thursday; $5 Friday; $3 from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and $5 from 6 p.m. to closing; and $3 Sunday. Children under 40 inches tall are admitted free of charge.
Ride specials include 10-ride wristbands for $30 each on opening night; 10-ride wristbands for $30 each between noon and 4 p.m. Saturday, valid for use by 6 p.m.; and all rides are three coupons or less Sunday.
Karoly Zeman and Ana DeSouza, from Circus-Circus in Las Vegas, perform a roller skating act at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 4:30, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday; and 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Sunday.
Spider-Man is scheduled to make appearances between 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The comedic Steve Bayner Hypnotist Show is slated for 10 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Hawaii Island entertainers include Positive Motion at 8 p.m. Friday; Ol’ School Band at 6 p.m. Saturday; Kahulanui at 8 p.m. Saturday; Kris Fuchigami at 4:30 p.m. Sunday; and Mark Yamanaka at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Waimea Town Meeting slated Thursday
A Waimea Community Association Town Meeting is slated from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Waimea School cafeteria.
Vas Podorean will share the history of Liquid Robotics, including the invention of the wave-powered autonomous ocean robot, imagined by Puako’s Joe Rizzi and engineered at Kawaihae Harbor.
The agenda includes updates on the possible partnership between North Hawaii Community Hospital and Queen’s Medical Center, as well as Keoki Magoon’s long-planned Greenwood Center retail complex.
Environmental planner Mike Donoho, with Kukui Planning, will lead a presentation to secure community input on a proposal to develop a management plan for the tentatively named Ouli Park.

Officer of the Year luncheon is Sept. 11
Kona Crime Prevention Committee’s Officer of the Year celebration is slated for Sept. 11 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. The program begins at noon; check in at the registration table by 11:45 a.m. The buffet luncheon costs $35, payable with cash or by check made out to KCPC. Parking in the hotel lot is $2.
Officers being honored include Jason Foxworthy, Justin Gaspar, Jason Hamada, Stephen Kishimoto, Nicholas McDaniel, Randy Morris, Brant Powers, Tyler Prokopec, Jeremy Riddle, Dwayne Sluss and Branden Watanabe.

Imiloa hosts planetarium
film festival
Imiloa Astronomy Center will host an international line-up of 25 digital planetarium films at the Imiloa Fulldome Film Festival Thursday through Saturday.
The festival is a chance for planetarium and museum professionals from around the world to preview and evaluate the latest content available for digital planetarium theaters. It will showcase a variety of production types, including computer generated imagery, time-lapse photography and full-dome videography.
New planetarium shows ranging from “Cell, Cell, Cell!” to “Dinosaurs at Dusk,” and “To Space and Back,” will be featured along with numerous other titles. There are shows for all ages during the festival.
